The Natural Surroundings

CocoCabañas is situated on the 22km long federally protected beach called Playa de Los Cocos (Coconut Beach).  The beach is open ocean, with tremendous blue, green, and turquoise waves that sometimes reach up to a staggering 15 ft in height.  Playa de los Cocos is a natural habitat for endangered sea turtles that come ashore and lay eggs (generally in the fall and winter months).

Dolphins and whales may also be spotted during migration periods.   Tropical flora also abounds in the zone.  Within a short bike ride, one will come upon immense palm, banana and mango groves.  Plum trees, blue agave fields, watermelon patches and chili plantations dot the landscape of the Isla de Navidad peninsula.

CocoCabañas lies directly on an open ocean that receives substantial wind and sun.  We have integrated our landscape into the natural context while creating a stunning and energy efficient compliment to the ocean, rocks, hills, and vegetation that form Isla de Navidad’s remarkable environment. Rather than combat the elements, and due to our energy system, we maintain plant species such as cacti and agave which naturally thrive in these rugged conditions and which require little water and energy.

The ocean at Playa de los Cocos generates large and powerful waves that are impressive to view from your cabaña. The ocean sounds can be quite loud, and composes a music that must be experienced to believe.  Sleeping at CocoCabañas is a truly phenomenal experience.  However, due to the large waves and strong currents, this beach is not recommended for swimming, and your safest way to get wet and cool off is in the pool.  Excellent beach swimming is just across the lagoon in Barra de Navidad.
